The Union Public Library serves a diverse community of more than 60,000 residents in two locations and is conveniently located in Union Township. We are currently seeking a part-time Youth Services Librarian to join the busy and flourishing Youth Services Department. With a brand-new, state-of-the-art Main Library building that opened in June 2025, this is the perfect time to join our team!
As part of the Youth Services Department and reporting to the Head of Youth Services, the individual in this role is responsible for providing services to children and teens.
The following list is a sample of the duties required of the position and will include other tasks, not listed below.
- Provides accurate readers’ advisory to youth and their parents/caregivers in person, electronically, and by phone, utilizing the online catalog, books, reference sources, bibliographies, databases, and the Internet.
- Designs and delivers storytimes, crafts, and/or other innovative and educational programs.
- Provides some technology assistance using public computers or online resources.
- Maintains youth collections and promotes the use of library materials.
- May perform outreach to schools and others supporting youth.
- Handle patron concerns and complaints with an emphasis on good customer service.
- Attends workshops and training sessions, stays well-informed of current trends in libraries, and helps develop ways to better serve the community.
- Exchanges ideas, information, and opinions with supervisors to formulate policies, procedures, programs, etc. to provide high quality services.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a library program accredited by ALA. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Hold or be eligible for a NJ Professional Librarian Certificate.
- Experience in a public library is preferred.
- The ability to perform both independently and as a team member.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbally.
- A passion for children’s and young adult literature.
- Familiarity with current library technologies.
- Experience working with youth; experience in planning and conducting children’s programming is preferred.
- An energetic approach to outreach to schools, daycares, and community partners
- Excellent communication skills, enthusiasm, courtesy, and flexibility
Schedule: Up to 18 hours/week; includes one evening/week and multiple Saturdays/month.
